Telos is a program that FamilyLight sm holds in high regard. We are currently placing abbreviated reviews on as many high quality schools and programs as possible, in response to the utilization pattern we see on this website. We want to indicate our confidence in as many good programs as possible, planning to return with more detail later.
(Article continues below box)
Telos is for teen aged boys under 18. We have found it to be a program with extremely high morale among the boys in treatment. It is situated in a pleasant residential suburban type neighborhood. The ambiance is homelike and nurturing.
It is unique in at least two respects:
● Dr. Coates, psychiatrist, co-founder, and we believe part owner of Telos, provides a level of intensity in psychiatrict support that in our experience is extremely rare in mental health facilities rendering any level of care, including hospitals. He is full time with Telos and actively participates in and guides all aspects of care with every resident. We know of only one other residental therapeutic school or treatment program with this level of intensity of participation by a psychiatrist in direct care of residents.
● Telos's triathalon program is unique innovation that we applaud. We note that this is especially of benefit to boys who have not been athletic competitors in the past, and the goal is not to turn them into superjocks. The purpose is to enhance confidence and self image. It is managed by people who have a clear vision that there are much higher priorities in athletic competition than winning at any cost.
FamilyLight sm has not determined the degree of consistency with our revised Guidelines on Addiction and Substance Abuse. We affirm our belief that Telos has given careful and responsible thought to planning its approach to these issues. We will want to examine that area closely when we complete a more complete review.
Telos is a potential candidate for our Positive Intervention designation if Telos management chooses to pursue that.
We welcome guest reviews, pending a more complete review of our own.
While you wait for us to present a more complete review, please look around this website. Look at our Guidelines -- a fairly comprehensive statement of what we believe quality is all about. If you come to a search and planning process with limited experience, this is an opportunity for you to find some principles to measure schools and programs against.
Disclaimer: No program review, no matter how positive, is a blanket endorsement. No criticism is a blanket condemnation. When we express our level of confidence in a school or program, that is our subjective opinion with which others might reasonably disagree. When we assert something as fact, we have done our best to be accurate, but we cannot guarantee that all of our information is accurate and up to date. When we address compliance with our guidelines, you need to remember that these are only OUR guidelines -- not guidelines from an official source. We have also set the bar very high, and do not expect any school or program to be in total compliance. It is not appropriate to draw a conclusion of impropriety (or even failure to live up to conventional wisdom) from our lack of confidence in a school or program or from less than perfect conformity to our guidelines. Some will say we expect too much. Readers are responsible for verifying accuracy of information supplied here prior to acting upon it. We are not responsible for inaccuracies.
We do not specifically endorse UK Shopping. They "sponsor" our counter.
