CooperRiis is a program that FamilyLightsm holds in high regard and expects to review in more detail soon. We hope to have that on the web by summer '09, perhaps sooner if we get a response to our questionnaire soon; perhaps later if we do not.
The very first thing for us to communicate about Cooper-Riis is that it is clinically excellent. The second thing we want to communicate is that it is operated with the highest level of transparency, accountability, and integrity that we see in this profession and industry. Virgil Stucker, founding Executive Director of CooperRiis is a man whose person, life, and work define the standards that we want to see. His work at Cooper-Riis is a labor of love, and the entire community becomes a reflection of his person and his life and that of the founding family, Don and Lisbeth Cooper. (We don't want to overlook the support of Virgil's wife, Lis, who is also very much a part of the community and very much a support to Virgil and the entire community). While we are starting out with reviews on the schools and programs we like the best, be assured that we do not give out such compliments lightly, and as you see the FamilyLight sm website develop, you will see the proof of that.

This being an abbreviated report on a program that describes itself honestly and accurately, we will refer you to the CooperRiis website and its one page summary rather than attempting a detailed description here. We do want to highlight a few points however. First, CooperRiis is in the process of developing a second site in the urban setting of Asheville, NC. There is already a Community Program in Asheville for residents who have made significant progress and are ready to live where they can take advantage of work and educational offerings away from the isolation of the main campus of CooperRiis. The new site will be close to the same kinds of community services but will offer the same intensity of support services as the main campus.
We also want to call attention to the goal of making CooperRiis available without regard to ability to pay. In general, residents who are engaged in the process of healing can obtain financial assistance after the first two months. We think this is unusual for facilities of this type.
We have the highest confidence in CooperRiis. We are yet to fully research this, but we are optimistic that CooperRiis will fully meet our Positive Intervention sm Guidelines.
While you wait for us to present a more complete review, please look around this website. Look at our Guidelines -- a fairly comprehensive statement of what we believe quality is all about. If you come to a search and planning process with limited experience, this is an opportunity for you to find some principles to measure schools and programs against.
Keep coming back to see the updates. Look at "What's New" (Announcements). In late spring of 2009 we expect to have returns from schools, programs, and related organizations published, giving deeper insight into these than has ever been available on the web before.
Feedback is invited. We will publish any feedback in good taste. Email FamilyLightResponse@yahoo.com
Disclaimer: No program review, no matter how positive, is a blanket endorsement. No criticism is a blanket condemnation. When we express our level of confidence in a school or program, that is our subjective opinion with which others might reasonably disagree. When we assert something as fact, we have done our best to be accurate, but we cannot guarantee that all of our information is accurate and up to date. When we address compliance with our guidelines, you need to remember that these are only OUR guidelines -- not guidelines from an official source. We have also set the bar very high, and do not expect any school or program to be in total compliance. It is not appropriate to draw a conclusion of impropriety (or even failure to live up to conventional wisdom) from our lack of confidence in a school or program or from less than perfect conformity to our guidelines. Some will say we expect too much. Readers are responsible for verifying accuracy of information supplied here prior to acting upon it. We are not responsible for inaccuracies.
