This organization is one that FamilyLightsm holds in high regard.  We will be reviewing the company as a whole and individual programs as we receive questionnaire responses.

(Article continues below box)

FamilyLightsm is an educational consulting firm specializing in work with families with a young person with behavioral, emotional or psychological difficulties.  We offer in-depth personal guidance to families on a fee basis and free guidance on the internet. FamilyLightsm attempts to be fully objective and accepts no advertising nor referral fees.

Briefly,  this is a publicly held corporation providing a wide variety of health services including and not limited to acute care medical/surgical hospitals and psychiatric hospitals.  Of initial interest to us are therapeutic/emotional growth boarding schools, residential treatment centers,  and one wilderness program.

FamilyLight welcomes Universal into the mix of resources in the private sector, a commitment that only apeared to become firmly established with the acquisition of the properties left from the Cedu/Brown Schools bankruptcy.  We believed then and believe now that it is good for the quality of programming that with the sheer size of the Aspen/CRC combine, backed as they are by the colossus of Bain Capital, another corporation of size entering the field to compete with at that level is a good thing.  It is clear that when they first entered this arena, they did not understand the culture of working with the private pay families and educational consultants.  However they have been fast learners. On that point, we would give them a B+, not quite an A yet, but they are moving slowly in that direction.  They were very wise to create a specific corporate division for some of these schools and programs that operate in a very different culture from acute care hospitals, removing them from the former geographical structure.  We believe that approach needs to be extended to all facilities that hope to attract the private paying families, if that has not already happened.

We welcome Universal to the mix, and express confidence in them as a corporation.

FamilyLight sm will review for publication any Universal Health Services facility which provides us with a completed questionnaire response (which includes providing one corporate response).  Pending receipt of questionnaire responses, we intend to develop at least abbreviated reviews on the programs we are most familiar with.  We expect all of these reviews to be either entirely or largely favorable:

As we develop reviews, abbreviated or otherwise, programs reviewed will appear in the above list and be converted to links to those reviews.

There are several more Universal programs that warrant consideration here,  for which we do not feel qualified to provide even an abbreviated review until we receive a questionnaire response.

Disclaimer: No  program review, no matter how positive, is a blanket endorsement. No criticism is a blanket condemnation.  When we express our level of confidence in a school or program, that is our subjective opinion with which others might reasonably disagree.  When we assert something as fact, we have done our best to be accurate, but we cannot guarantee that all of our information is accurate and up to date. When we address compliance with our guidelines, you need to remember that these are only OUR guidelines -- not guidelines from an official source.  We have also set the bar very high, and do not expect any school or program to be in total compliance.  It is not appropriate to draw a conclusion of impropriety (or even failure to live up to conventional wisdom) from our lack of confidence in a school or program or from less than perfect conformity to our guidelines.  Some will say we expect too much. Readers are responsible for verifying accuracy of information supplied here prior to acting upon it. We are not responsible for inaccuracies.
