FamilyLight ^sm is a special needs  consulting service for parents struggling with the psychological, behavioral, or maturity issues of a son or daughter. More specific examples might  include a child who is painfully shy or fragile in some way but not a behavior problem. Others have had an isolated behavioral incident that requires a change of school but are not special needs students in any conventional sense.   Not nearly all of our clients are specifically Special Needs children in public school terms but all have some kind of  need that is special.   Complex psychiatric issues may or may not be involved. Some of our clients have substance abuse issues, but certainly not all. A very few have also been involved in criminal activity, although most have not. Our primary role is to help  families develop and implement a plan for resolving these presenting issues.  Frequently, but not always, this involves referral to residential or inpatient services.

While most who do work similar to ours use the title "Independent Educational Consultant" or "IEC," we prefer "Special Needs Consultant."  We think it is more descriptive of what we actually do.
